We are delighted to invite you to our next Medicine for Members’ event, ‘Breast cancer at the Royal Free London: early diagnosis, research, and support’, on Monday 10 June at 6pm. This event will showcase the incredible work of our breast screening and cancer teams.

Our trust is one of the largest cancer services in the NHS, receiving almost 50,000 referrals every year. We receive the most urgent suspected referrals for bowel, skin, gynaecological and breast cancers.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with over 55,000 cases diagnosed each year. One in seven women will develop the disease in their lifetime and one man is diagnosed every day.

This event will focus on the importance of early diagnosis including how often and how to check your breasts for the common signs of breast cancer, the ground-breaking research taking place to help us better understand the disease and the vital support that is available to our patients and their loved ones. This includes the brand-new Maggie’s centre within the grounds of the Royal Free Hospital which opened earlier this year.

Our expert panel of speakers will also share advice on how attendees can reduce their risk of breast cancer and debunk some of the common myths around what causes the disease.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from:

  • Claire Mabena, lead breast care nurse for the North London Breast Screening Service (NLBSS) and the Central and East London Breast Screening Service (CELBSS)
  • Judy King, consultant medical oncologist and clinical service lead for oncology and palliative care
  • Cathy McDaid, lead nurse for metastatic breast cancer

Our panel will be joined by Kim Stoddard, senior operations manager for NLBSS, CELBSS and the London Administration Hub, and Stephanie Scott, superintendent radiographer for NLBSS and CELBSS, for the interactive Q&A.

If you would like to submit a question in advance for the Q&A, please email rf.membership@nhs.net by 5pm on Friday 7 June. You can also submit them live on the day.

Our Medicine for Members’ events are hosted by our governors and focus on topics which are important to patients, staff and the local community. This event will be chaired by Jane Gizbert, elected public governor, and streamed online using Microsoft Teams Live.
