Diabetes Nursing Awards (77).jpgA Royal Free London nurse has won a diabetes award for a research project aimed at improving care for patients with diabetes and advanced kidney disease.

Dr Hellana Habte-Asres won research project of the year at the Diabetes Nursing Awards on Friday night for her work which showed that providing diabetes care as part of patients’ kidney care led to better health outcomes.

Hellena said: “The ceremony at Thistle London Marble Arch was a lovely event and I was incredibly grateful to accept this prestigious award. This recognition is not just a personal honour but a testament to the collective effort of an incredible team and the supportive environment that has made our work possible.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to my research and clinical mentors. Without their unwavering support and guidance, I would not have been able to achieve this milestone in my research endeavours. Professor David Wheeler, Professor Angus Forbes, Dr Miranda Rosenthal, Dr Sally Hamour and Alisha Ali - your expertise, encouragement, and mentorship have been invaluable throughout this journey.”

It examined a number of different factors including the patients’ diabetes control, weight reduction and kidney function and it found positive outcomes for those whose diabetes and kidney care had been combined.

Hellena said: “The patients we care for have advanced kidney disease so they are not very well – they may struggle to access the diabetes care they need because they may already be attending many other appointments. My project showed that if we provided diabetes treatment as part of their kidney care, they are more likely to end up with better outcomes.”

The project was so successful that the combined clinics are now being rolled out to patients at the Tottenham Hale Kidney and Diabetes Centre.
