The enabling works for our plans to build two new vascular theatres at the front of the Royal Free Hospital will run from February to July 2025.
IHP is our appointed contractor for these works and the proposed construction of the new theatres. In line with the Royal Free London’s clinical vision for cardiovascular services and as the designated vascular surgical hub for north central London, the theatre expansion will enable us to treat more patients, reduce the time people have to wait for surgery and improve outcomes for those with cardiovascular disease.
From February, IHP will also be temporarily using the former nursery space at 27-29 Pond Street as an office base. This will typically be during working hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Prior to occupation IHP will undertake a cosmetic refresh of the space to make it safe and suitable as office accommodation. This is likely to take 30 working days.
What will the enabling works involve?
We expect the on-site enabling works to cause minimal disruption to residents. We have a disruption management plan in place, and the works are unlikely to cause a build-up of traffic or noise disturbance.
Plant and equipment used for the operation of four MRIs will be relocated across the ground, fourth and fifth floors of the Royal Free Hospital to enable hospital services to be maintained during the construction of the theatres.
This will involve a crane lift being on site on the following dates:
- Saturday 29 March
- Monday 7 April
- Saturday 12 April
- Saturday 3 May
- Saturday 17 May
On these dates, the HAS road (as pictured below) will be reduced to one lane but will still be accessible to ambulances and cars entering the Pears building car park. Our parking teams will be on site to manage the flow of traffic. Pedestrian access to the Heart Attack Centre and radiotherapy is unaffected.
