Patients receiving post-stroke care at North Mid will be benefiting from a donation of radios gifted by the Enfield Chase Rotary Club.

The donation of 20 radios aims to improve patient experience at the Trust’s dedicated Acute Stroke Unit. Jim Whyte, a  volunteer at the North Mid for 20 years, who spent 10 of those years as a 'Befriender' on the Acute Stroke Unit, talking to patients about his experience of life after stroke, worked with Juliet Summerscale, Speech and Language Therapist at North Mid, to enhance patient wellbeing on the unit.

Juliet asked patients what they thought would improve their experience and found  listening to the radio the most popular request; Jim and Juliet then contacted the Enfield Chase Rotary Club who were happy to help source the radios.

Juliet Summerscale, Speech and Language Therapist at North Mid, said: “I’m really pleased to receive this donation from the Enfield Chase Rotary Club and I want to thank them for their kind generosity. We’re always looking for ways to make our care even better and these radios will make a big difference to how patients spend time on our Acute Stroke Unit.”

Christine Clark, from Enfield Chase Rotary Club, said: “We were delighted to fulfil Jim's request to provide radios as he was our founding President, 15 years ago when the club was formed. He is still an active member even though he suffered another stroke recently and was on the same ward that he has volunteered for all these years, and found that having a radio was a great comfort to him.”
