Members of the Hornsey Library Charity Knitting group donate hand knitted items for Dementia patients at North Mid.

Putting their needlework skills to work, members of the knitting group stitched, crocheted, and embroidered a wide variety of items including twiddle muffs, shawls and blankets.

Formed in 2017, the volunteers and members have met every Tuesday from 2-4pm to create a colourful array of items for the elderly and dementia patients.

The group is affiliated to the Alexandra Women's Institute and each item knitted has the Alexandra WI rating.

The items are used as a part of a wider programme of engagement activities which North Mid provides for dementia patients to support alongside their treatment.

Caroline Johnson-Nwosu, Dementia Lead Nurse said:

“Our patients with dementia frequently experience restless hands especially if their job was manual activities, typing or playing music.  Therefore, holding things help to keep their hands engaged is a great source of comfort. The purpose of twiddle muffs is to provide patients with something that is visual, tactile, keeps their hands comfortable, warm whilst promoting sensory stimulation.

We like our patients to be as much comfortable as possible and to reduce some symptoms of dementia in a therapeutic way. Having items available helps us to meet patient’s need as soon as possible when agitation, frustration, or restlessness kicks in.”
