When Sir Elton John played his first and last Glastonbury on Sunday night there was one member of Royal Free London staff who had a much closer view of the 76-year-old pop legend than most.

By day Ennis Langdon is a finance administrator for the private patients unit at the Royal Free London but in his spare time he is part of the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC), who were asked to support Elton at the legendary festival.

The choir’s history with Elton dates back nearly 30 years ago. The choir recorded the backing track for Circle of Life as part of the original motion picture soundtrack for The Lion King released in 1994. The choir perform worldwide and have supported countless stars including Madonna, James Brown, Leona Lewis, Diana Ross and Blur.

Ennis, who has been a member of the LCGC for 27 years, said: “Of course I’m used to performing but it was an incredible buzz meeting Elton and being out in front of that size of an audience on Sunday night. We supported on two songs – Are You Ready For Love and Sad Songs.”

To beat the rush from the car parks Ennis and his fellow choir members jumped in their coach straight back to London as soon as they left the stage – getting back at 2am in the morning.

“The experience will stay with me for the rest of my life,” said Ennis. “It did feel a bit surreal to be back at my desk on Monday morning but it was lovely to hear from staff how much they’d enjoyed the concert. There were certainly a few shocked faces when I told people what I’d been up to at the weekend!”
