We aim to do everything that is possible to ensure all our patients feel welcome at our hospitals. We provide safe and accessible facilities for people with a disability, including:
- Car parking for blue badge holders.
- Wheelchairs for those who need them.
- Accessible toilets throughout our hospital buildings and a Changing Places facility at Chase Farm Hospital.
- Facilities for patients and visitors who have trouble hearing or seeing, including automatic voice announcements in lifts at each floor and information in Braille. Guide dogs can also accompany people to visit hospital patients.
- Liaison nurses for people with a learning disability.
If you need support to get around the hospital, a volunteer may be available to escort you. Please ask hospital staff at the reception desk of the hospital you are attending.
If you are visiting us as an outpatient, we can provide adjustable couches. We also have a range of specialist beds that adapt to the needs of most hospital inpatients. Please tell staff if you have a physical need so that they can make your hospital stay or visit easier.

All doors for patients inside the hospital have been built with additional width for wheelchair access and there is no uneven flooring in the hospital.
How to borrow a wheelchair
Wheelchairs are available on the ground floors of Barnet Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital by the main receptions. At Chase Farm Hospital, they can be found outside the main entrance by the bus stop and inside the building next to the car park entrance. You can help yourself to chairs from the stores if they are available. If there are no wheelchairs available, then you can book a porter at main reception. Wheelchairs can also be hired from the British Red Cross on a longer-term basis.
Parking for blue badge holders is free for the duration of your stay in any space in our patient and visitor car parks. Our sites are managed by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, so blue badge holders must register on each visit, or once every 24 hours (whichever is shorter), to obtain this concession for the duration of stay.
Please see below for specific information on the site you are visiting. You must take your blue badge with you to register. You will not be required to return to your car to display this. Failure to register your blue badge will lead to a parking notice.
