Why visit the pharmacy first for minor health conditions?
Pharmacists are highly skilled and qualified health professionals who train for five years in the use of medicines before they qualify. They are here to help you with your health needs quickly and conveniently.
Did you know that community pharmacies now provide a wide range of services under a scheme called ‘Pharmacy First’?
This includes:
- Treating minor health issues like:
- Earache (for those aged 1 to 17)
- Impetigo (for those 1 year and over)
- Infected insect bites (for those 1 year and over)
- Shingles (for those over 18 years old)
- Sinusitis (for those aged 12 years and over)
- Sore throat (for those aged 5 years and over)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) (for women aged 16-64 years)
- Giving flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to keep you protected
- Starting oral contraception without needing to see a GP first
- Providing blood pressure checks to help monitor your health
- Helping you stop smoking with advice and support
- Offering healthy eating and exercise advice to keep you well
These services are part of the NHS’ plans to improve access to primary care services. This will make it quicker and easier for you to access the care you need from the right service.
Don't wait for minor health concerns to get worse – think Pharmacy First.
Support for patients on low incomes
If you are being redirected to a pharmacy from North Middlesex Hospital and are worried about paying for medicines, please read the following information:
No charges for prescribed medication supplied
For certain clinical conditions, the pharmacist will be able to provide you with prescription medicine. If you do not normally have to pay for your prescriptions, you will also not be charged for any such medication provided to you.
Free over-the-counter medicines
If the pharmacy recommends over-the-counter medicine, you will not have to pay for it if:
- You are eligible for the North Central London (NCL) self-care medicines scheme.
- If the medication you require is one of the ones included in the scheme.
Eligibility for the NCL self-care medicines scheme
- You must be registered with a GP practice in north central London.
- You must be on a low income and eligible for free prescriptions. This includes:
- Receiving universal credit, income support, or income-related employment and support allowance (ESA).
- Having a valid NHS low-income scheme HC2 certificate.
- Receiving Income-based jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) or pension credit (guarantee credit).
- Being a young person aged 16-18 in full-time education or an accredited apprenticeship.
- Being homeless with a local authority 'letter of homelessness.'
Proving eligibility
To prove eligibility, you will need to provide some form of ID and evidence such as:
- A Universal Credit or Income Support letter.
- An NHS Low Income Scheme HC2 certificate.
- A local authority 'Letter of Homelessness'.
- Any other evidence you would usually show to the pharmacy to prove your right to free prescriptions.
If you go to a pharmacy from where you usually collect your prescriptions, they may have this information already, and you may not need to show it again.

Your choice to stay in our emergency department (A&E)
If you are not comfortable with being redirected to a pharmacy, you do not have to agree to it. You can choose to stay in the A&E department.
What you need to do
- Let the reception staff or one of the hello clinicians (the people greeting you at the front door) know that you intend to stay.
Please note:
-
Please be aware that if you choose to stay in the hospital, it will likely take longer for you to get the treatment you need.
