This leaflet answers common questions about having a urodynamic test. If you would like further information, or have any worries, please do not hesitate to ask your nurse or doctor.
In all cases, a doctor will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. In most cases it will be possible for a friend or relative to accompany you for all or part of the procedure. Please ask your nurse or doctor.
What is urodynamic or cystometrogram testing?
These are tests to show how your bladder works which have been requested by your urology consultant. They help us explain your symptoms and provide you with the correct treatment.
The test involves catheters (thin tubes) being inserted into your bladder and bottom. Your bladder will be filled with normal saline via the tube to help us see how your bladder works.
How should I prepare for the test?
Prior to this test, please complete the enclosed bladder diary for three consecutive days and bring it with you to the appointment. The measuring jug can be bought from your local pharmacy or discount store. If you already have a catheter inserted, please ignore the bladder diary request.
If you are taking anticholinergic medication (oxybutynin, tolterodine, solifenacin, darifenacin, fesoterodine, flavoxate, propiverine, trospium chloride or mirabegron) please stop the medication one week prior the test.
If you have symptoms of urine infection such as burning when you wee, fever, or feeling unwell please cancel your appointment on the number below (leave a message if necessary). Please see your GP about the infection. A new test date will be offered after you have been treated with antibiotics for the infection by your GP.
What should I do when I arrive at the hospital for the test?
Please check in with the receptionist on the third floor, kidney, and urology department. Once you are checked in, the clinical nurse specialist will help you to get changed into a hospital gown. You will then be asked to provide a urine sample so please arrive with a 2 reasonably full bladder. You can bring your own urine sample from home if collected within two hours before the test.
How long will the tests take?
Please allow an hour for the test. You will be able to return to your normal activities after the test. Please note if you are late for your appointment (20 minutes or more), you may lose your time slot and will need to be rebooked for another day.
What should I do if I need to cancel or change the appointment?
Please telephone 020 7794 0500, extension 32583 if you need to change or cancel your appointment. Where possible, please do so at least 48 hours before your test so we can offer your appointment time to someone else. You will be removed from our waiting list if you fail to attend your appointment without letting us know.
