Our lymphoedema service sees all patients who have lymphoedema and chronic oedema (conditions that cause swelling due to a build-up of fluid in the body’s tissues).
The service is open to adults and children who live in the borough of Enfield and have a GP in Enfield, Barnet or Haringey.
The swelling must have been present for at least three months before the team can see you.
A range of treatments are provided, including diagnosis and treatment, education and support and the promotion of self-management and prevention at our community clinic or at your home, according to your individual needs.
This service is available for patients with primary and secondary-related lymphoedema and chronic oedema.
Primary lymphoedema is caused by mutations in genes responsible for the development of the lymphatic system. In some people, it will be evident at birth but in others, it may be identified later in life, possibly triggered by an event that has caused further damage to the system.
Secondary lymphoedema arises because of damage to a normally functioning lymphatic system. There are many causes of secondary lymphoedema including surgery, cancer treatments, trauma, cellulitis and lifestyle factors including obesity and inactivity.
