The North Middlesex mental health liaison service is a team of experienced specialist mental health professionals who provide prompt, high quality psychiatric assessments both in the emergency department and inpatient wards within North Middlesex University Hospital.

Depending on the outcome of your assessment, you will be directed to appropriate services best suited to meet your needs.

The service also offers advice and information to people with mental health problems who are receiving medical treatment in North Middlesex University Hospital’s emergency department or other wards and provide support and education to North Middlesex University Hospital staff.

Our multi-disciplinary and integrated mental health service (provided by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust in partnership with North Middlesex University Hospital) is an important link between the hospital and mental health services, enabling continuity of care and support for patients.

Our team see patients aged 16 and older in the emergency department or adult inpatient wards at North Mid who may have a mental health aspect to their condition, advising clinical teams and supporting patients.

Patients with the following conditions are commonly seen:

  • primary mental health problems, presenting acutely (including self harm, suicidality and psychosis)

  • co-morbid mental health problems (including dementia, substance misuse, and depression) that may be impacting on their physical health problem

  • medically unexplained symptoms

  • perinatal mental illness (during pregnancy, birth or up to a year after your baby is born)

The team is led by manager Kwaku Adjei (Alfred) and includes old age and general adult consultant psychiatrists, mental health nurses, psychologists and peer support workers.

A 24/7 service is provided and referrals are accepted from North Middlesex University Hospital clinicians.
